Making Ordinary Days Feel a Little More Special π
Yesterday, my sister sent me something that made me laugh.
It said, "Even my downtime has a to-do list." π€£
Apparently, she knows me pretty well!
But it also got me thinking.
The last few months have been so busy that I realized I haven't been taking much time to enjoy some of the little things I love.
I enjoy reading, spending time outside, reaching out to family and friends, and just sitting quietly for a few minutes. But somehow, those things keep getting pushed aside by everything else that needs to be done.
Yesterday, though, I took a little time to sit on my front porch. I also texted my nephew, Justin, that I haven't talked to in a while.
The weather was beautiful, and I just sat there enjoying my surroundings. Sometimes Hershey, my chocolate Lab, joins me and lays on the porch. Oakley, my younger white Lab, can come too, but she still needs a leash because she's a little too enthusiastic about everything! π€ͺ
Nothing particularly exciting happened.
And that was kind of the point.
It was just a few minutes of enjoying an ordinary day.
Little Ways to Make an Ordinary Day Feel Special
I've been thinking about how we don't necessarily need more time, money, or elaborate plans to enjoy life a little more.
Sometimes it's simply doing something ordinary a little differently.
Use the pretty things. Why save your favorite dishes, blanket, or tablecloth for a special occasion? An ordinary Tuesday is a perfectly good reason to enjoy them!
Enjoy what's right outside your door. Sit on the porch, notice the changing leaves, or take a few minutes to enjoy the fresh air.
Make a routine a little more pleasant. Play some favorite music while doing chores, use a lotion with a scent you love, or make an everyday meal feel a little special.
Make room for something you enjoy. Read a few pages of a book, call a friend, or spend a little time doing something just because you like it.
Notice the little moments. A beautiful sunset, a funny conversation, or a few minutes with someone you love can make an otherwise ordinary day memorable.
And here's something I'm reminding myself of, too:
Maybe making an ordinary day feel special isn't about adding more to our schedules. Maybe it's about enjoying a little more of what's already there.
We don't need to turn enjoyment into another item on our to-do lists. (Although apparently I might need some practice with that! π€£)
